Last week was a new record for the fastest 1/2 marathon I completed this year and today I set a new record for my slowest half marathon of the year!
but ...I still did it! :) (insert big grin here) :)

I kept my right hip on ice as I slept last night and had another ice pack on it while driving to the run in Cape Girardeau, MO. My trip was extra interesting when my ice pack broke and discovered a gelatinous muck all over my upper thigh :)

During the first 3 miles of the run I could tell that I've improved cardiovascularly and upped my run/walk ratio to 50/50 with 2.5 min running and 2.5 minutes walking but I could tell there was more in me regarding the running but, then again since the half is 13.1 miles in length I thought the 15 second increase in running over last week was ample and would still give me a new PR.

I only lasted about three miles w/ the running before my right hip was completely toasted. I had a shuffle kind of run I was trying and also learned that if I landed on the front of my foot that there wasn't as much pressure put on my hip but ....after the first three miles there was too much pain and I reverted to walking exclusively. I literally
limped the next 6 miles or so which, in itself takes a negative toll on the body because the biomechanics are all screwed up and not in balance which causes other areas of the body to get sore.

Towards the end of the race I was able to walk a little better but after the race was over and I tried walking after standing for a while ...
...WOW - SCOTT WAS OUT OF ORDER! Nada Locomotion - zip, zilch ...wasn't happening.

My Karate Sensei, who was struck with polio as a child, currently has better mobility than I do. Basically, any periods of inactivity are now met with seized muscles around my right hip and simply standing requires a moment to stabilize myself before I can take even a single painfully sore, slow steps in any direction.

So ....it looks like I'll be giving running a break for a while. I notice I still need to get 40 miles of biking in for September and six more workouts.

I did find one of those long (4 feet or so) cylindrical styrofoam things that people use to massage themselves and have read good things about them so I might have to pick one of those up to aid my recovery. It may have been smarter for me not to run last week the day immediately after the record setting half marathon run and ...cranking out a leg workout w/ 500+ pounds on the leg press may have been a bit much especially considering the amount of leg work (with weights) I was doing previously didn't much exist. Maybe a tad too much ego and not enough brains infiltrated my training regime.
Karate is kind of a new mix also and maybe I could have listened to the medical tech who advised me not to do anything strenuous after giving blood for a couple days (advice I totally ignored)

Still ...I think I'm around 60 miles for the month with running which completes one aspect of my September Challenge objectives. :)

For Eating today I had some sort of Monster brand java energy drink that came with my race packet and, in keeping with tradition, went to a buffet after the run. Today it was a very nice Chinese Buffet in Cape Girardeau. :)
