The Machines Are Taking Over!

dukowitz@gmail.com's picture

As long as they don't become self aware I should be alright.

The living room conversion is going well. As I peer out over my computer monitor I now see a treadmill and an elliptical machine. Six hours from now, I should also be able to see a Stair Stepper machine! :)

YeeHaw! just keeps getting better and better :D

checked in on the Wii Fit today and I'm right in the middle of my new weight range of 269-274lbs

I'm guessing I should be in a new weight range come the third week of September :)
almost forgot to the right of my monitor is also an adjustable bench and a few friendly dumbbells :)

Great Weekend - Fun Monday! :)

dukowitz@gmail.com's picture

I didn't realize it until this morning but, I didn't even leave my house once this entire weekend :)
I had some rearranging of my library I've visualized accomplishing for my summer break so I started that on Saturday and didn't get everything completed until Sunday at noon ...at which time I finally went to bed which made my Sunday start of the day at 8:30 p.m. ...and I guess I'm still up from that time but, my place is looking nice.

This mornings workout was a blast - the GHF 3 day per week workouts totally rock!
My parents are heading to the Ozarks for a few days so we'll be moving our Wed, Fri workouts to Thur, Sat and I'll need to pick up two more 10 pound plates so I can run the dumbbells up to 85 to 105lbs which will be *very* nice :)

What Day is This?

dukowitz@gmail.com's picture

Missed one little day on the Wii Fit and that little box has the gall to rib me about it the next day - What's up with that?! :)
Non-the-less, it does appear that I've had a fourth weight range drop which now puts me in the 269-274 range.

I did complete my first Trimester at Logan yesterday with a 3 hour final in Chemistry. It was a good trimester - 4 classes - 4 A's! :) Yahooo! :D

By 7 p.m. last night though, my head was killing me and off to bed I went - not to awake until 11 hours later! :) (very nice) :)

Dad surprised me today by picking up a few more 10 pound plates so I was able to go a little heavier on some of our lifts.

Feeling the Changes!

dukowitz@gmail.com's picture

I am definitely feeling the changes - We've moved to the GHF Phase I push/pull program, added the C25K on Monday and hit the heavier bench reps Monday as well ...and maybe the long bike ride on Sunday morning plays a part in this too but I have been TIRED - and just a bit sore but all in good places.

The higher ab reps are a result of the GHF program which states to go to failure w/ the crunches and we've maintained the Ab Lounge Crunches we were doing initially but it's been making a difference. I'm definitely noticing more meat on my arms and the tops of my thighs are pretty sore today from Monday evening's run.

315 x 7

dukowitz@gmail.com's picture

I finally made it out for a 2nd little workout today and was able to complete some of my August Objectives.

I benched 315 for a strong 7 reps. I didn't have a spotter so I had to stop while I was still strong. I think it was a fairly good bench considering how long I've been out and how light the weekly workouts have been. So far, so good.

I went to the park afterward to get in my first little bit of jogging this year :)
I'm using the C25K program as a guide, and including the 5 min warmup totaled 25 min and covered 1.59 miles
average heart rate was 137 bpm
longest distance jogged non-stop was 0.4 miles

230 Ab Reps! :)

dukowitz@gmail.com's picture

Everything is progressively getting better.

I managed to break 200 ab reps today. My Dad sprinted through his workout and was finished by the time I had my last two sets of crunches. He did 225 reps total so I perservered until I hit 230 :) LOL

I told him we'll have to set a goal of getting 500 reps between the two of us.

It was a good workout.

Monday Workout
Ab lounge crunches 2 sets 50 reps
DB Bench 45x15, 60x12
Military 115x12, 115x10
DB Shrugs 45x15, 60x16
Triceps Pressdowns 40x15, 90x12
Crunches 2 sets of 50, then 80 reps

Breakfast got improved again as we added crunshed Walnuts to the oatmeal, along w/ Rasins, a banana on the side, Milk and soy protein.

Wii Weight

dukowitz@gmail.com's picture

I just checked in with the Wii today and got in around 1/2 dozen exercises. The current weight range I've been measuring against was 274-279 but, I noticed today that my last 9 weigh-ins have all been under that weight range - all under 274 so I've definitely been transitioning in the right direction.
With the addition of the C25K program I think I'm just going to be looking for the weight numbers to start dipping into the 260's by the end of the month with increasing frequency. It seems reasonable that I could burn off another 2 lbs of fat over the next two weeks and maybe another pound if I'm diligent enough with my training.

Moonlight Ramble & Redemption

dukowitz@gmail.com's picture

4:30 a.m. but tonight it's for a fitness cause :)
at 12:01 a.m. the annual Moonlight Ramble kicked off in St. Louis featuring somewhere in the neighborhood of about 40,000 bicyclist, I was in the middle of the pack and it took about an hour before I reached the starting gates :)
According to my Garmin I burned 3,243 calories so I figure it's Pizza Time! :) (just kidding) ;)
This year they only let about 500 bikes through the gates at a time and while it took longer to start I didn't have to come to a complete stop anywhere along the ride. The actual ride was about 16 miles this year. I maintained an average heart rate of 146 bpm and hit a high of 178 - full details can be seen here ...

Execution!

dukowitz@gmail.com's picture

What I thought was going to be Humble Pie on Tuesday turned out to be more of a guillotine! After finishing I thought maybe I could have gotten a C on the test. Some people were counting on taking the class over. Today, we found out from the teacher that the scores were so atrocious that she refused to post them. She gave us all a copy of the same test to rework tonight and hand in tomorrow then she'll average the grades of the two test together for our final test grade.
The highest grade was a 72% so I'm hoping that was me but most grades were 40% or less.

could be another all-nighter ....

Two Thumbs Up!

dukowitz@gmail.com's picture

My evaluation last week w/ my chiropractor went well, we went over the results today and I got two thumbs up for being able to start the Couch to 5K (c25k) program!

The first thing I did was sign up for the Indy 500 1/2 marathon to be held next year on May 2nd. Miles 6-8 of that run are ran on the Indy 500 race track! 2 Kewl! :D

I think today was my 54th day on the Wii and I started back w/ light lifting about 4 days before that. I've been weighing in at the bottom end of my weight range (circa 275lbs) for about the last 4 days so I should be hitting a new weight range around this time next week which is pretty much right on schedule.

10+20=1

dukowitz@gmail.com's picture

Audrey just reminded me of my math days so I'm coming up with another New Math

10+20=1

All that's needed to solve that equation are the units and conversion factors. :)

What we have there are 10 salads PLUS 20 turkey sandwiches equals 1 pound of fat lost.

Chemically (and loosely speaking)we could state

10Sa + 20Tu ---> 1Fa

(where Sa=Salads, Tu=Turkey and Fa = Fat)

This would be an exothermic reaction because heat is given off.
There is also a time component to the equation so the math portion would be a function of time.

In math we have Groups, Rings & Fields (in the realm of Algebra anyway) - I'd have some defining to do ...

To Sleep or Not To Sleep

dukowitz@gmail.com's picture

Last night, I chose to sleep - 12 hours straight as a matter of fact but Tuesday night, there was no sleep. However, I did manage to conclude my chemistry homework on time and got my fourth straight 102%! Only two more assignments, one test and a final before that class is over on the 21st of this month!

Looking back ...I kind of wish I would have known about the 12 hour extension our teacher gave on getting the homework completed since so many other students didn't get the homework done due to "server problems" hmmmm.... LOL

Before I concluded my marathon awake session I did manage to get 1/2 hour in on the Wii. I had only weighed in and done a body test the day before so I knew I was at least 5 exercises behind schedule but that 1/2 hour should have put me back on track (and then some) :)

100% Salad - NO Lettuce - New & Improved for August!

dukowitz@gmail.com's picture

hehehe ...I do believe that is the longest titled I've ever used here on the GHF blogs :)

We've got a big bag of spinach, one pound container of organic grown baby spring mix, a bag of Veggie Spring Mix, 2 cups of soynuts, *unsalted* sunflower seeds, three fresh cut cucumbers, two diced green peppers, one bag of steamed broccoli & cauliflower, one bag of steamed brussels sprouts and not a drop of lettuce! -
there simply wasn't any room left in my big mixing pot -
it was enough to fill up 10 quart sized Ziplock bags and should last me through the weekend.

but wait! there's more!

Monday Workout

dukowitz@gmail.com's picture

Today was a much abbreviated workout because I overslept. The last 4 or 5 days have been a bit different. For one thing I haven't made my passel of sandwiches and salads and I've had some very late nights ...Sat night was so late I didn't end up laying down until 3 p.m. Sunday afternoon and had to be up at 5:30 to go to a birthday party.

Without the pre-made meals I don't think I've gotten in the 5-6 meals per day but rather more sparse eating with some generous meals thrown in the mix. Non-the-less, my weight was rock steady for the past 4 days and then took a drop today of a little over 5 pounds which I look at as a preview to a new, lower weight range. I have an adjustment appointment today at 3 p.m. and should be able to spend a good 8 hours studying after that so I've definitely hit my goal of 40 hours studying over the past four days.

Two August Goals

dukowitz@gmail.com's picture

the time is just whizzing by here - I didn't fully realize we were in August until I was looking at Audrey's August goals and remembered I need to do something with that when August gets here ...then I realized, it's already here!

I loved the fact that Audrey had Wii Fit related goals.
I've never kept specific track of what I do on the Wii partly because I wanted it to be as fun as possible and didn't want to detract by writing anything down.

However, the Wii does keep track of how many times you do each exercise so I compiled a beginning total for the month of August on how many times I've completed either a Yoga, Strength, Aerobics or Balance exercise with the following results;

5:30 a.m.?

dukowitz@gmail.com's picture

some study - found some good chem sites but kind of just frittering time away now ...
the workout today was fun - i'm thinking I need to get doing more exercises on the Wii again - I check in everyday and usually do a little something but it's been a while since I've put a in 30 min or more.

I keep trying to allocate things in my mind - planning when I'll fit everything in. Often I'll try to keep studying when I lay down for bed by continuing to go over equations and formulas. I need to get my next batch of sandwiches and salads made up ...

I could use another bonus workout at the gym this weekend. I'm trying to get in 40 hours of study between Fri and Monday (inclusive) so far so good.

Shiny Bronze Pig!!!

dukowitz@gmail.com's picture

I got a Brand New Shiny Bronze Pig on Wii!!! :)

For those not familiar w/ the Wii, there's a sort of piggy bank w/ a screen that makes up the body of the pig that alternates between showing you how many minutes you've exercised on the Wii for the day and how much total time you've put in on the Wii.

Every time you complete an exercise it drops in gold coins equal to the number of minutes you exercised. I just broke 10 hours total time on the Wii so it threw a little party for me then changed to a nice shiny bronze color! :)

I'll tell ya, it really doesn't take much to make me happy!

4 AM

dukowitz@gmail.com's picture

I'm not sure what time stamp will be on this blog but it's about 4 a.m. where I'm at now but my homework is complete and meets expectations :)
I might be a little too persnickety and stubborn w/ my homework but, I've got the time and I see that as my job. This makes the third homework assignment in a row w/ a grade of 102% :D

Julia mentioned smoking to me in a previous reply and it did get me thinking about that again. Even though I don't have any specific or particular designs on quitting it would be GREAT if I didn't smoke in the house. With that in mind, I came up with a 25% plan. I'm marking 5 cigarettes in each pack with a yellow highlighter on the filter and those cigarettes are to be smoked either outside or in the garage.

Grub & Wii

dukowitz@gmail.com's picture

One more class out of the way and unless the earth starts rotating backwards or something it should be an A for bio - only about 100 more classes to go!

15 minutes of Wii today and I bought a slew of food last night so I'm ready to make some killer salads this week. I found the unsalted sunflower seeds and a bag of soynuts which contain 11g protein per 1/4 cup - lots of new veggies for the salads

also got some oven roasted chicken this time along w/ a pack of oven roasted turkey. The chicken is 10 more calories per slice but also an extra 2g protein per slice so that sounded like a pre

Monday Workout

dukowitz@gmail.com's picture

Nice workout this morning to get the day started and a little Wii afterward. Weight only went up 0.2 lb but that's alright, I can't say I liked eating that late meal last night - just doesn't feel very good the next day. Dad wants to move the Wed workout up to 8 a.m. and that's fine by me.

I'm looking forward to having the extra time three nights a week after my bio class is over this week not to mention the extra time from not studying. It reminds me of a time I was cutting back on expenses to save money - when I cut back my cable to the most basic level, I would make transfer to my savings account on the day I paid my bill in an amount equal the what I was actually saving ...so it would really be saved. I'm thinking of the time "savings" in the same manner.
